If you have single or double-hung windows that open vertically, it can be very frustrating if they don’t stay open. When windows slide back down shut every time you open them, the problem is usually caused by balancing mechanisms in the window sash getting disconnected or damaged.
Trying to fix a window that won’t stay open? Here’s what to do.
First, you should assess what may be preventing your window from holding its position. Follow these steps to check for common issues with your window sash:
Tilt the window sash (that’s the part of the window that surrounds the glass and holds the glass in place in the window frame) inward 90 degrees until it releases from the jambs (jambs are the main vertical parts forming the sides of a window frame). Then, inspect the pivot bars (these bars facilitate the pivoting motion of the window sash on its hinges, allowing the window to open and close on each side of the window sash).
If you see any damage to the pivot bars, they will need to be replaced. You can buy pivot bars for DIY replacement at any hardware store, but to avoid further damaging your window we recommend contacting your local
window repair company to do the job right the first time. If the pivot bars look fine, move on to step two.
With the window sash still tilted inward, inspect the shoes (shoes work in conjunction with window pivot bars to allow windows to tilt along the jamb). If the shoes are out of position, then the window sash has nothing to attach to that will hold it open. Correctly positioned shoes should sit about halfway up the jamb. If you notice the shoes are located too low or even at the bottom of the jamb, they likely need to be repositioned.
To unlock the shoe and move it back up the jamb, use a screwdriver to turn it so the U-shaped slot faces sideways. Slide the shoe up into the correct position, then lock it in place by rotating the slot so the “U” faces upward again. Place the window sash back on the jambs and conduct a test to see if this solves the problem. If not, move on to step three!
If one or more of the shoes are damaged or broken, you will again need to replace them with new shoes or get professional help from a window repair company. If you’re purchasing the replacement shoe yourself, use the screwdriver to pop the damaged piece out of the jamb to take with you, ensuring you buy the correct replacement part. Again, it’s best to consult a professional!
If you have taken all the necessary steps to fix issues with the pivot bars and shoes but your window still will not stay open, the issue is within the internal mechanisms of the window itself. In this case, you’re likely going to need to look into replacement windows. When replacing your windows, safety and security should remain top of mind, so DIY methods aren’t going to cut it. It’s time to bring in the experts!
Windows that won’t stay open are often a symptom of a larger problem. While the issues can be fixed in the short term, old, worn-out windows will eventually break down to the point of requiring replacement. By replacing your windows when problems first arise, you’re investing in the future of your home in several ways!
High-quality
replacement windows from a highly skilled window installation team like Hanke Brothers will give you peace of mind that they will withstand the test of time to keep your home insulated and increase
your home’s value.
Traditional vinyl window sashes are reinforced with aluminum or steel. Although they might sound strong, they’re actually not very energy efficient. Changing temperatures heavily influence these metals, causing a thermal short circuit and ultimately not lasting as long.
The Polaris® windows we offer at Hanke Brothers are designed with a resin-based, glass-filled composite window sash to assure maximum strength, energy efficiency, and durability for the life of your home.
The quality of your replacement windows goes beyond the window sash right down to the balance. A well-designed balance guarantees smooth window operation for years to come, so you are much less likely ever to have a damaged pivot bar or misaligned shoe.
Rather than using outdated, unreliable spiral or block-and-tackle balancers, the balance we use on our Hank Brothers Premium Windows Teflon®-coated, stainless steel coil is protected inside of a thermal housing, making it stronger and thermally superior to anything else on the market.
When it comes to replacing your windows, you don’t want to cheap out on quality. The windows Hanke Brothers installs in Central Arkansas homes are custom-made for each building for better performance and aesthetic appearance!
